The credit crunch of 2008 produced an international recession in 2009. In this new book Claudio Katz and Michel Husson, both fellows of the International Institute for Research and Education, and SSP activist Raphie de Santos lead an attempt not to only to describe the present crisis, but also to understand its causes and debate socialist solutions.

This 216-page book brings together much of the most powerful socialist analysis of the recession.

Sean Thompson shows how neoliberal globalisation has an inbuilt tendency towards deflation. As explained in the article by François Sabado, the period since the turn of the century has been a disaster for American capitalism; first the catastrophe in Iraq and of the Bush government in general, and now an economic collapse that has completely undermined neoliberalism's 'Washington Consensus'.

The ideologues of capitalism are on the defensive. But the Marxist explanation of the crisis has to be hammered home. Who caused this crisis? Why did it occur? What is it in capitalism that leads to the globalisation of poverty while a tiny elite become mega-wealthy? And what are possible alternatives? This book is a signal contribution to making those arguments.

New book: My Life Under White Supremacy and in Exile

Leonard Nikani's autobiography, My Life Under White Supremacy and in Exile, is the next book to be published by Socialist Resistance. These memoirs give a graphic portrayal of a black man growing up in racist South Africa. Click here to read about next week's London book launch.

Leonard began to question the racist system while still at school. As a student at Fort Hare University he became involved in the political struggle, joining the Society of Young Africa, the youth organisation of the Unity Movement of South Africa. He remained committed to the political struggle for the rest of his life.

He exposes the policies of the ANC and the South African Communist Party in the liberation struggle, which led to their failure in government to meet the demands of the masses. Like so many other political activists he was hounded by the racists and forced into exile.

He gives a dramatic account of a secret mission to South Africa for his organisation, and his subsequent escape to and imprisonment in Swaziland. Following his release from prison he lived in Sweden, where he remarried and had two children. He died in 1999 in Sweden.

Editors Norman Traub and Robert Wilcox have edited the memoirs into a compelling 336 page volume, with a beautiful cover designed by Ed Fredenburgh. The book will retail for just £10 or $15 though booksellers (using the ISBN 978-0-902869-85-1).

New: Cuba at Sea

Ron Ridenour, whose book 'Cuba: Beyond the Crossroads' came out in an expanded edition last year, has published a new book with Socialist Resistance: Cuba at Sea.

This book gives a unique view of the Cuban revolution: from the ocean, where Ridenour worked with Cuba's merchant navy.

The only foreign writer to portray things Cuban as a volunteer merchant marine, Ron Ridenour sailed six months on five Cuban ships around the island nation delivering petroleum, and to and from Europe with container goods, to tell Cuban sailors' views of their society and the world.

Expanded second edition of Ecosocialism

One of our best-selling books, 'Ecosocialism or Barbarism', will come out in an expanded second edition later this month. You can click on the image above to get a better look at the cover.

The number of pages is up, to 176, and the price is down, from 10 to 6 pounds.

A number of typographic corrections have been made in the book, and a major new section has been added: a resolution on 'Savage Capitalism' which explains the perspectives of the British ecosocialists. The draft of this resolution was published late last year by International Viewpoint.

Respect: Documents of the Crisis

Respect as it was originally constructed - as an alliance primarily between the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and George Galloway - is dead.

The introduction to this 140-page book explains that "Respect stood on the gains of the anti-globalisation and antiwar movements, and on the fact that the anti-war movement had begun to build among sections of Muslim communities who had not previously engaged with British politics.

"But the SWP is painting a dishonest picture of what lies behind the division within Respect. They claim that they are the left in the split and everyone else is on the right (or is naively misguided, which is just as insulting). They repeat their disgraceful attacks on the Scottish Socialist Party, and by implication make comparison between those who support Respect Renewal with those in Rifondazione who have backed Italian Prime Minister Prodi in sending troops to Afghanistan. Such comparisons are ridiculous.

"Disregarding the grandiose comparisons with the splits between the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks for the delusions they are, this pamphlet shows the political positions of those the SWP would paint as "the right".

Progress disrupted by Kautsky

Socialist Resistance had its AGM last weekend; the first year of our book project was felt to have gone well. Many thanks to you, our readers, for your support.

The incoming steering committee has just been given a report on our growing online sales, through bookshops like Amazon.com. Phil Hearse's book is our best-seller over the last three months, selling more than three times more than any other book. In the US, Celia Hart's book is selling very strongly, as is Permanent Revolution.

However, we've found some problems in our first digital printing of Karl Kautsky's book, 'Foundations of Christianity'. Most importantly, in David Packer's afterword the footnote numbers and italics are missing.

Luckily, we have sold fewer than a dozen wholesale, and we are withdrawing that edition from public sale. Folk can return the book to us at any time for a replacement; the major printing of the book will be out next month.

Even large publishers have similar issues with small-scale books. Because it's important to us that readers get the most from our books, we are in the habit of making small initial runs like this to allow us to get books quickly to reviewers and activists who have an urgent need for the book. That allows us to correct, in a second edition, errors that get past our editors.

We have started to circulate to readers a list of the corrections we are making. All the errors identified so far will be corrected in that second edition.

The LCR and the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan: First issue of 'Notebooks of the Crab'

Our next book will be a title in French: is the first number of Les Cahiers du crabe (Notebooks of the Crab): "l'intervention soviétique en Afghanistan (1979)". The documents which are reproduced there, in a chronological order, all come from the bulletins interior, known as BI, of the LCR (internal discussion bulletins , in theory relatively confidential) and of its publications, Rouge (weekly of the LCR, whose files are gradually made available in DVD), Critique Communiste (theoretical review of the LCR), Inprecor (International Press Correspondance, news review of the Fourth International).

A further set of themes "On the PCF", reproducing criticisms of the LCR on the standpoint of the Communist Party in France, is placed after the other articles. At the end of the review, a special booklet of the LCR on the question of Afghanistan, published in mid-February 1980, is reproduced just as it is (this section has the least aesthetic quality).

The editors decided, for practical reasons (availability of the files and a number of pages of the review), to stop at the date of March 1980. However, a Critique Communiste article of December 1981 gives the reader a critical review with respect to the initial position of the LCR.

Notebooks of the Crab

The Notebook is published by the 'Association to safeguard of the memory of the French section of the Fourth international' (ASMSFQI). It has two wishes: to save the files of this political current, by collecting them and by digitizing them, and to allow their access. With this intention, in addition to its Internet site, it publishs a review which reproduces various documents, all resulting from the French section of the Fourth international ( at different times known as the Internationalist Communist Party, communist league, and now LCR) and all related to a specific topic.

The idea of the Notebook is this : to reproduce articles of Rouge, La Verite, and Inprecor, extracts from discussion bulletins, and posters to allow the readers and to know reader what the internal debates of the French section of the Fourth international were and what was its public positioning on such questions. It does not have any further scientific or analytical aiming. the task of the ASMSFQI is making documents known. The Notesbooks do not aim to be a place of study or criticism. Simply they aim to be able to support certain studies, reflections, and personal training, by giving access to documents.

Coming soon: Foundations of Christianity

We've just completed the set-up for our next book, Foundations of Christianity. Reading over Michael Lowy's introduction, it's clear that this work will be very significant, and in demand for a long time.

Karl Kautsky is probably the first Marxist to interest himself both in the movement and the enigmatic personality of the crucified prophet.

His 1908 book Foundations of Christianity is a rather impressive attempt at a Marxist analysis. The book is rather original, innovative and has been translated into nine languages.

Kaustky made his Foundations of Christianity into one of the most popular Marxist theoretical works. Its popular success is probably due to the interest of socialist militants to see a vision of the origins of Christianity which permits the modern workers' movement to appropriate to itself the figure of Jesus as a prophet and martyr for the proletarian cause.

Kautsky wanted to interpret early Christianity as a precursor of the contemporary working class socialist movement. His friend, and later his opponent, Rosa Luxemburg, in an article of 1905 called “The Church and Socialism insisted that the first Christian apostles were Communists who denounced injustice and the cult of the Golden Calf". He counterposed a materialist account of the new religion against the Christian mythology and showed the capacity of the Marxist method to give an account of a complex historical process, interpreting a religious phenomenon in terms of the class struggle.

The book is divided into four sections:
1) Society at the time of the Roman Empire: the slave economy, the absolutist forms of the state, the different manifestations of cultural and religious crisis.
2) Judaism: the class conflicts of Israelite society and the various political-religious currents (Sadducees, Pharisees, Zealots and Essene.
3) The beginnings of Christianity: the early Christian communities, the idea of the messianic Christ and Christian communism.
4) The fourth section is dedicated to the “personality of Jesus”.

According to Kautsky, what distinguishes Jesus' messianism from the other rebellious Jewish prophets of the era - all of whom had a strictly national character - is its social character, its calling as an international redeemer. "Only the social Messiah, not the national, could transcend the limits of Judaism", survive the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem and, above all, find a hearing among the poor of all nations.

By associating the hostility of the oppressed classes to the rich with proletarian solidarity, the messianism of the Christian communities promised the redemption of the poor, and so it could gain followers beyond the Jewish world.

In the last analysis, Jesus, "the crucified proletarian Messiah" managed to defeat Rome and conquer the world, but in the course of this process the Christian movement suffered an "inverse dialectic": it lost its proletarian and communist character and was transformed into a state religion, under the control of a vast dominating and exploiting apparatus - the Church.

Earlier editions of this book have been massive: 480 pages, in the case of the most recent edition. By using the larger Crown Quarto size used by many textbooks, we have been able to reduce the book to under 300 pages. That has reduced our production costs by two-fifths. As a result, the book will retail for just £12 -- rather than the £20 associated with the regular Demy Octavo size.

'Permenant Revolution' back in general distribution

In July we'll also be publishing Leon Trotsky's The Permanent Revolution in a new edition. It will combine Results and Prospects, where the theory of permanent revolution was first explored. Both works are introduced by major essays by Michael Lowy.

We've also taken the time to update the translation a little: readers should not have to cope with old-fashioned term, such as milliard (the old term for what we now call billion).

Now that pathfinder has taken the book off their list, we hope this bright design, new typesetting and modern introductions bring this look to a new audience.

Take the Power to Change the World, which the IIRE is publishing jointly with Resistance, looks set to become our best-selling book yet.

In this 144-page collection of essays, some of the world's most dynamic progressive thinkers discuss how to change the world: including John Holloway, Daniel Bensaid, and Michael Lowy.

The Zapatista rebels and the Seattle demonstrators were the tip of an iceberg of social and political revolt against the injustices of corporate-led globalisation. It was against this background that Irish academic John Holloway, working in Puebla, Mexico, came forward with his book Change the World without Taking Power. The book took up a phrase used by Zapatista leader Subcommandante Marcos, that the EZLN wanted to democratise Mexico, but did not seek to “take power”.

The very success of Holloway’s book, the fact that it was taken the least bit seriously, came from the political conjuncture – the ‘spirit of the times’. For tens of thousands of global justice and anti-war activists, often influenced by the ideas of NGOs, the aim was precisely to make the world fairer and curb the power of the multinational corporations, but not necessarily to end capitalism as such.

With this book, readers will see how a whole new series of experiences since the year 2000 have put Holloway's thesis to the test.

Take the power to change the world. A expanded version of an ebook produced by the IIRE.
Permanent Revolution and Results and Prospects. Pathfinder Press deserve kudos for keeping this book in print for so long: the volumes they sell of it must have been very small and so it's no surprise they have decided to drop it from their list. An excellent version has been prepared by Kunal Chattopadhyay. We hope to have more modern translation than that 1931 edition, and with essays by Michael Lowy to introduce both these classic works.
Expanded edition of Cuba: Beyond the Crossroads. Ron Ridenour's books has sold well, and Fidel's illness has inspired Ron to expand his book (out in May).
Foundations of Christianity. This is a classic Marxist work by Karl Kautsky, one of the most famous defenders of socialist ideas in the years before the First World War.

Ron Ridenour, the celebrated writer on Cuban and Central American politics, will publish his new book, Cuba: Beyond the Crossroads, on November 7th. His books include Cuba: A "Yankee" Reports, Backfire: The CIA's Biggest Burn, Cuba at the Crossroads and Yankee Sandinistas. A committed revolutionary, anti-war activist, and supporter of the Cuban revolution, Ridenour's book gathers report and accounts of his extended journey in Cuba earlier this year. It has already generated widespead controversy.

Second printing for Celia's book

The response to Celia Hart's book has been so positive that only six copies remain from the first printing.

The second printing will arrive on Monday next week, in time for copies to be taken to the International Revolutionary Youth Camp.

We're making two slight changes to the second printing. In the first printing, citations of Leon Trotsky were translated from the Spanish; in the second printing we have checked these against the translations from the most commonly used English editions of Trotsky's works (It doesn't make a substantial difference, but it makes it easier for people wanting to consult the full texts). We have also increased the type size a little in the second printing: there's a growing fashion for larger type in books, especially in the US, and we want to reduce the barriers that might exist to win wider distribution.

Truth, Love and Appetite

Last week we shipped off copies of Celia Hart's book to leading academic, and activist, libraries in Britain, Cuba, Ireland and The Netherlands. We're also starting to get powerful feedback from readers who took us up on our pre-publication offers. In particular, comments come under three forms: about truth, love and appetite.

Truth is an important aspect of this book. Of course, Celia speaks for herself when she discusses the challenges facing revolutionaries around the world. However, her book is a partial antidote to a lot of the misunderstandings, confusion and propaganda being spread by both the enemies of the Cuban revolution and some of its more critical friends. This book allows a Cuban revolutionary to speak in her own words to an English-speaking audience. That's a powerful contribution for Socialist Resistance to make to the left and that approach is reflected also by our recent dayschool, which allowed comrades from Brazil, Cuba and Venezuela to speak in their own words.
Love was also a parent of this book. The care and thoughtfulness put into the translations and design of this book is all the more important because that work is done by volunteers. The translations were done by friends at CubaNews, and checked and reworked by comrades of Socialist Resistance here in Britain and the US. The design and the wonderful cover image of a Cuban flag flying against a blue sky really mark it out as a book that is a real pleasure to read.
Appettite is also important. Socialist Resistance is produced by a pretty small network of people. It's important, I think, that this is our first book. It says something about priorities. It's a major investment, and we've put in the effort needed to get this book the access it needs. We've produced this book in the Demy Octavo format most widely used by bookshops around the work, rather than the A5 format most commonly used by European socialist books. It's printed on classy cream-coloured paper, which so many mainstream publishers use now, and which makes the book easy and soothing to read. We've also made it available to booksellers around the world through Ingram's book wholesaling system.

Our printers have just confirmed that Celia Hart's book will soon arrive from the printers. The cover photo, used with the generous permission of Michael Hopwood, makes the proof copy look fantastic. We can't wait to see the 'real' book.

However, the publication of the book involves a real investment, both politically and financially, and we are keen to get the book into people's hands as quickly as possible.

A large part of the first batch will be going abroad, including copies for the José Martí National Library of Cuba, to our friends at CubaNews, for the offices of the Communist Party of Cuba's central committee and for the International Institute for Research and Education.

Copies of the books are also being donated to the major reference libraries in Britain and Ireland: the Bodleian Library, Oxford; the University Library, Cambridge; the National Library of Scotland; the Library of Trinity College, Dublin; the National Library of Wales and the British Library.

Of course, copies will also be sent to radical bookshops and major distributors.

However, all of this means that little revenue is generated by the first batch of books -- especially since the major book distributors take most of the cover price for themselves.

At the dayschool on June 24th, readers will have the opportunity to buy the book at a hefty prepublication discount. We recommend that everyone take us up on the offer, not the least so we can afford to rapidly shift out the whole batch of books.

It's never too late to love or rebel

Socialist Resistance is publishing its first book. "It's never too late to love or rebel" is a collection of articles, interviews and papers by Celia Hart, a member of the Cuban Communist party. Walter Lippmann has selected and edited the documents in the book.

Walter is the editor of CubaNews, which has a leading role in translating and distributing Celia's articles into English. His collection contains Celia's best-known articles written since 2003. It contains a number of recent articles that are not included in Apuntes revolucionarios, a Spanish collection published last year, including an interview with International Viewpoint. It is one of these articles which provides the title of the book.

The book returns from the printers in the next few weeks, but we are hoping to be able to show a proof copy of the book to Celia and other attendees at the Socialist Resistance dayschool on Saturday.

Unusually for a left-wing book, It's never too late... is aimed at wide distribution. It has an attractive full-colour cover and will be printed professionally in the Demy octavo format which is most widely used by modern publishers. It will be available though both online booksellers, from Socialist Resistance and to booksellers through Ingram's global book distribution network.
